SAFETY RULE FOR BATHERS.

A CHAMPION SWIMMER

TALKS.

Seaside visitors, more particular- ly women, frequently say to me, 1 would love to hybe, but, I am afraid to be use cannot swim," writes a swimming champion in a Home paper.

My invariable answer to this is: "You need have no fear. If you keep your head there is not the slightest risk of drowning even if you are unable to swim a stroke,"

And that is absolutely true. Nearly all seaside fatalities, are due to neglect of this very simple rule. Bathers are carried off their feet by a wave, or find themselves be- yond their depth, or for some other reason imagine themselves to be in danger. Thereupon they throw up their arms, begin calling for help, lose all presence of mind, and the tragedy happens.

A non-swimmer who gets into difficulties may get out of them quite easily. The right thing to do is to turn flat on your back, hold. your body stiff with the arms ex- tended above the head, breathe gently, and you will float safely until help comes.

"All very well," you may say, "but that needs practice." It does not. Practice will give such con- fidence that you will be almost able to sleep on the surface after a while. But this safety position comes to you almost instinctively if you do not get flustered. The wrong thing to do is to thresh about with your arms and open to scream. Every your mouth time you do so you swallow water. Once commence doing that and the end will soon arrive. You will become waterlogged and sink like a stone.

If you are a tyro, the most un- nerving moment will be the firat time you sink, as you are bound to do if you have got beyond your depth. What is actually only a second of submersión will seem an Shut alarmingly long period. your lips tightly. When you bob to the surface throw back your head and blow the water from your nostrils. If you sink again de not be frightened. Keep your head cool, avoid swallowing water, lie straight on your back, and you will I be all right..

Money is urgently needed for the coming season's work, which will occupy two months.

Recent dental research proves that film a chief enemy of healthy teeth and gums. -the source of, most dull teeth, a chief cause of many gum disturbances.

Because old ways of brushing failed to: remove film successfully, a new way in tooth and gum care is being widely sug- gested by dental authorities. These are embodied in the special film-removing dentifrice called Pepsodent.

Now an effective film combatant For years dental science sought ways to fight film. Clear teeth and healthy gums come only when film is constantly com- bated-removed every day from the teeth.

Film was found to cling to teeth; to get. into crevices, and stay; to hold in contact with teeth food substances which fer- mented and fostered the acids of decay. Film was found to be the basis of tartar. Germs by the millions breed in it. And they, with tartar, are the chief cause of pyorrhea and most gum disorders.

Thus there was a universal call for an
