HOW CHIEF ENGINEER DIED
This week will stand out in the Colony's history as one of the worst periods in the long sequences of piratical attacks on the China conat. Scarcely had the public received the news of the attack on the Chinn Merchants ateamer the s.. Hsinchi by the notorious Bias Bay gang when comes' the news of the piracy of the Indo-China vessel, the s.. Yatshing. Two piracies in a few days is distinctly unusual, but when a third outrage is added to the list before the week is out, then a new and most unpleasant record is set up.

The belief is growing that there was a deliberate attempt to wreck the Bourdeaux express.
The rails had been loosened for a distance of 24 yards.
The engine, tender and luggage van overturned. Four pullmans were left on the track. The line With the attack on the Hongkong-Wuchow river steamer, the

Sleeping passengers had a rude s.a. Kochow, the scent of pirate activity shifts to the West River, awakening, the train known to be a dangerous stronghold of freebooters. The out-travelling at 50 miles an hour, but standing feature of the attack on the Kochow is the brutal murder they escaped with
shaking-Reuter. of the Chief Engineer, Mr. R. Black.. He was deliberately shot in the head when reaching for his revolver. Not satisfied with murder- ing Mr. Black in cold blood, the "pirates callously threw his body overboard.
Another feature of the piracy is the boist that those who or- ganised it were also responsible for the attack on the Solviken and other vessels. The pirates travelled nearly a dozen times on the Kochow before making their attack, and spent $10,000 in laying their plans. And yet they were rewarded with a meagre haul.
No estimate of the total booty has yet been made, but the cargo was not a valuable one, none of the passengers were wealthy, and the losses sustained by the officers, although serious to themselves, gives little cause for satisfaction to the pirates. How the Kochow was pirated is told below.
