Most of the China news to-day relates to the struggle that is taking place between the North and the South for the control of the Yangtsze between Shanghai and Nanking,
There are conflicting reports owing to rival claims. The North claims to have crossed the river at several points, while the South claims to have inflicted heavy losses on those of the enemy who did get over and also to have taken large numbers of prisoners. It is significant, perhaps, that there are very few Southern soldiers left in Nanking and that defence positions have been prepared behind the city.
