Woo was afraid to shout for help, as they held their pistols to his body. On reaching a rough portion of Thorburn Road, how- ever, where the chauffeur had to slow up, the kidnapped man tried to force the door and jump out. lic was partially successful, when one of the gang shot him in the thigh. lé managed to get out and jump from the car, when they shot him twice again. The police belleve that they would have killed him, had it not been for a Rus- sian laundryman, driving a van for the Shanghai Steam Laundry, who When jumped from his vehicle. they saw him the two men ran off. while the third with the chauffeur, who was apparently in the gang, escaped.

Sir-It' has come to our know- ledge that statements are being mado to the effect that the Kow- loon. premises of the Hongkong and Kowloon Taxicab Co. Ltd., which collapsed during last Satur- day's typhoon, were constructed by, or under the supervision of, the Hongkong Engineering and Construction Co, Ltà..
As such statements are likely to be detrimental to this Company I am instructed to state publicly that we had no connection what- over with the design or construc- tion of the premises in question.
The facts of the case are, I be hove, that the premises were built by a firm of contractors which had
a; brief existence in 1924 under.. the name of the "South China Con- struction Company.”
In view of our persistent efforts to maintain a high standard of materials. and workmanship it is extremely annoying to learn that such imputations are being made, and I trust you will give publicity to this disclaimer. Yours, etc., . Hongkong. Engineering &
