INWARD MAILS.

BEACON FROM STATUE OF LIBERTY,

AMERICAN PREPARATIONS FOR CAPT. COURTNEY.

New York: When Captain F. T. Courtney, the British airman who. is planning to cross the Atlantic, renches New York Harbour, he will find it lit up by searchlights giving 8,500,000,000 candle power.

Arrangements for this illumina- tion were planned to-day at a meeting of the Mayor's Committee on Reception, at which Sir Gloster Armstrong, the British Consul General, was present.

The lighting will be carried out York. The engineers of the Com-: by the Edison Company of New pany said it would be the greatest concentration of artificial lighting ever furnished for an occasion of this sort.

A landing place for Captain Courtney Half a mile long and a quarter wide will be kept clear to the south-west of Governor's Island. The area will be marked by four city ferry boats, which will, have eight searchlights, giv ing ten thousand million candle power.

On the crown of the Statue of Liberty a large beacon light will be placed to help to guide the air- man, who is expected to arrive between ten and eleven o'clock at |night, and another beacon will be

lighted on Governor's Island.

"No Half-Hearted Welcome." The U.S. Coast Guard Service will man three searchlights at Fort Hancock and at Sandy Hook. These lights will make it possible for Capt. Courtney to land at Sandy Hook, in case he cannot land in Upper Bay. Two other searchlights will also be kept going at Fort Tilden, Rock- away Point.
