The announcement as to the early arrival hore of the British Minister, Sir Miles Lampson, may stir the embers of hope, says the Shanghai Mercury, and proceeds; Trade is in a parlous state, and keen disappointment has been felt and openly expressed the lack of action on the part of the Foreign Powers to preserve the shreds of privileges bestowed upon them by treaty.

Yesterday there was a violent shower which had the most dis- astrous results. Roads were bad- ly damaged, bridges were ruined, and in some cases washed away entirely. The swimming pool (Russian valley) was completed filled with rocks and sand, the dressing rooms were completely wrecked, and the trees were up- rooted. The fine new stone bridge leading to "Three', trees" was destroyed. This was sur prising in view of the fact that this bridge was only finished last year, and should have weathered any storm for a number of years, but apparently bad foundations
