THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,
CHINESE SITUATION,
GATHERING OF THE NATIONALIST LEADERS.
Shanghai, Aug. 16. At noon yesterday, the local officials of the Nanking Government met the Defence Commissioner of Shanghal and notified his col- leagues that he is forwarding his resignation to Nanking immediate ly.
General Chow Feng-chi, Governor of Hangchow, whose attitude is re- garded as doubtful in view of pre- vious affiliations with Sun Chuan- fang, arrived at Shanghai this morning and called on General Chang Ching-kang, the former Chairman of the Central Executive Committee at Nanking. He report- ed that the situation at Chekiang is peaceful.
There is a Chinese report to the effect that General Tang Sang-chi, Wang Ching-wei, Tan Yen-kai, Sua Fo and General Chang Fa-kuei, of Kiukiang, have telegraphed to the Nanking commanders Li Tsung- jen, Ho Yingchien and Pei Tsung- chi to go to Klukiang immediately to discuss the general situation.

Shanghai, August 16. It is clear now that the latest coup against Marshal Chiang Kai- shek was instigated by, the Nan- king military lenders, headed by General Li Chung-jen, the Kwang- si commander, who has since be-
the Vice-Commander-in-1 chief of the Army. The political leaders of Nanking such as Iu Han-min, Wu Chi-fai, Chai Yuan- pei, etc., are becoming dissatisfied with the now situation created by the Chiang's resignation and they are threatening to resign also The reason for this is that the Kwangsi generals headed by Li Chung-jen will join up with Hu Han- liankow, and Messrs. min, Wu Chi-fai, etc., will lose their present influence. Mr. Hu has always been a rival of Wang Ching-wei, and Sun Fo, the Han- kow leading figures, and Mr. Wa Chi-fat was the chief promoter of the recent movement in split- ting with Wuhan and establish- ing an independent government in Nanking.

Alleged Confessions.
"An Indian cook attached to the Mule Corps, when asked if he could furnish any clue relating to the Jemadar's death, said that two Doggas had killed the officer. These men were taken to the Police Station but were later re- leased.
When asked how he came by his information, witness replied that he had met these two men one day when they were both drank and "now the Jemadar was dend there they themselves had told him that
would be nothing for them to be afraid of."
It was because the deceased had caused the two men to be punish- ed that they committed the act.
Answering the Police, witness said that he was also told by the men that the revolver which was
