BRITISH PEERS AND THEIR LANDS.
TITLES WITHOUT THE HOLDINGS.
A notable feature of the great Scottish Historical Pageant at Craigmillar Castle this month (July) is the number of members of the Scottish nobility who will play the roles their ancestors en- neted in real life. It is however, a remarkable fact that many of our noble familles in Scotland have now no territorial connexion with the places from which they take their titles, however much their ancestors may have been associated with these districts in the past, writes Mr. A. J. New. landa, to the Daily Mail.
There is, for example, the Earl of Leven and Melville who also bears the titles of Viscount Kirk endle, Baron Ralgonie, Baron Monymail, and Baron Balwearie,

THE WORLD'S BEST SALESMEN.
FAMOUS AMERICAN'S TRIBUTE TO BRITONS.
Mr. Howard J. Heinz, of '57 varieties fame, is making a tour of investigation in England in con- nexion with his firm's plans for the doubling of their British fac tories, the first of which was ca- tablished in 1905. That he brings an alert and apprecintive mind to bear on the problems of British in dustry is evidenced by his enthus- latle tribute to the commercial awakening he finds everywhere in this country as demonstrated-by the marked improvement in our sales. manship and advertising.

his Fifeshire estates. immediate
Even the Dukedom of Fife has now no Fifeshire property per taining to it, although the associa tion of the Macduffs with "The Kingdom" of Fife dates to very early times..
On the other hand, the Earl of Elgin, who has no territorial link with the Moray Firth county, from which he takes his title, owns the estate of Broomhall in Fifeshire. It is indeed a curious coincidence that an Earl of Elgin should have a purely Fifeshire connexion while the late Duke of Fife had no association with Fifeshire but was Lord Lieuten- ant of the County of Elgin.
There are many other cases where titles, still in existence have now no relation to the places from which they were derived.
The Earldom of Cathcart has no connexion with the suburb of Glasgow which goes by that name. And though there is an Earl of Arran his name is not derived from the Scottish island at the mouth of the Clyde; the Earldom of Arran is purely an Irish Litle.
Mr. Heinz drew an interesting illustration from the Pure Food Act now in operation. This was, he pointed out, virtually the Act which was passed in the United States in 1906. it was really an- other aspect of salesmanship. Per- haps British manufacturers did not fully understand one of the most valuable results of the Food Act.
That was the better under- standing of the business of food preparation which it gave the con- sumer. In America the Pure Food Act was followed by an immediate increase in the consumption of pre- pared foods, and therefore in re- duced prices and improved profits. In Britain this was vital to the health and welfare of the people. Mr. Heinz stated that to his mind the British Empire Marketing Board was another sign of the awakening of British salesmanship. There was a true analogy between a business and the Empire in its economic aspect. Empire goods needed to be produced and resented with a view to competitive sales- manship. As an American who admired the British Empire's con- tribution to civilsation he believed In the slogan "Empire goods for Empire consumption."
TALK ON LONDON'S TRAFFIC.
EXPERTS FAIL TO REACH CONCLUSION.
An effort to bring London pas- senger transport facilities under one control was made last month at a conference at the Ministry of Transport, but an air of mystery covers what occurred.
Traffic experts, representatives of the four big railway companies, .of. the Underground and buses, and of the borough of Croydon, East Ham and West Ham, reviewed sugestions for five hours. They failed to come to any definite conclusion:
A Ministry of Transport official would make no statement concern- ing the meeting. "Special circum- stances," he said, prevented him from doing s0. One of the traffic experts went further, declining to. say whether the meeting had been amicable or otherwise.
Sir Herbert Walker, general manager of the Southern Railway, who was present, told a Daily Chronicle representative that the fact that no decision was reached 'did not necessarily mean that the scheme would be dropped or materi- ally altered.
It is understood that the meeting was called as a sequel to investiga- tions carried out in North and South London as a result of which the Traffic Advisory Committee concluded that the solution of the traffic problem lay in the introduc- tion of co-ordinated control. To this. The Daily Chronicle was in- formed, the committee still adhere. There will be further discussion Colonial Dispensary, Queen's Dispensary. I next week. THIS startling claim was made by a
number of the worl's foremost authorities after a great many years of research.
The cockroach, we are told, by defiling food with its dirt and filth, spreads the dreaded germ of cancer.
As the tireless enegry of man has traced the cancer germ from its inception, so man's ingenuity has also discovered the way for destroying the loathesome cockroach
