BEAUTIES OF THE THAMES.
THE MENACE OF UGLY BUILDINGS.
Is the beauty of the Thames Valloy being destroyed? Two re- cont incidents give point to this question, says the Observer. At Twickenham there is indignation at the proposed extension of the Convent School in the grounds of Popo's Villa, which adjoins the river. From Pangbourne and Gor-||| ing comes the news that a local soclety is being formed for the purpose of preserving the beauty of the valley and preventing the spread of such building as will Impair that benuty
These two incldents raise n question of fact and one of pulley and power. Is it true that the beauty of the Thames Valley which in one songe is 'n national. possession is being spoiled or lost? And if it is being material- ly impaired, is it within the power of those to whom it is a precious thing to do anything to stop or to control the process?
It is worth while to consider these questions. As to the first; it must be an everlasting wonder and surprise to the frequenter of the quiet river reaches that Na- ture, on the banks of a river, has such an extraordinary ameliora tive and recuperative power that most of the things that threaten disfigurement do, in the course of time, die down into the general concordance of form, colour, tone, on which so much of the river beauty is dependent. Whatever one may have to any of the wider | atretches of the river valley, the river and its banks remain coir- tinuously and wonderfully benuti- ful The predecessors of the Metropolitan Water Board have been responsible for the things that have in the past marred the beauty of the lower river the re- servoir, walls, banks, chimneys, and pumping houses that still ut terly spoil long stretches of the banku.
Victorian Relics.
The Victorian builders did much harm, as, for instance, in the tall, treat whitebrick and slated houses of the Surbiton front, which will never, if they stand for a thousand years, pass into the general scheme, or the later than Queen Anne style houses in red brick' that mar the north, bank at Staines. But these things are exceptional, and every oarsman and saunterer must have noticed how, as the years go by, buildings that threat- en to strike a note of ugliness be- come first harmless and unnotice able, and then, by the attraction of their gardens, climbers, and overhanging trees, pass them- selves into a part of the river bank beauty. There have been many changes along the banks. Whole long reaches are thick with bunga- loves that thirty years ago were fringed with Willows or deep- buried beneath lush grass, but it is difficult-save at certain excep. tional places--to say that the river is less beautiful now than i was thirty years ago. It is in many places a different beauty, admit- tedly, but the river is still in many ways and for many people the most beautiful things provided by Nature for the refreshment of London.
Bungalow Horrors.
It is astonishing how, with the spread of building, the view from Richmond Hill has been, in so great part, preserved. From the first entrance gate to the Terrace Gardens the view is just what it had always been-not n single building in sight to mar the scenje fitness. From the Terrace itself the story is crent-a great spread of red roofs has come into the one-time verdant sweep from Twickenham westwards. There are, too, a few horrible things ou

Insects Bring Disease to Thousands!
THESE tiny pests are more dangerous to our health and well being than an. invading army. Insects steal on us unawares carrying disease and death to everyone in the family including the in- lant in arm. The fly brings cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis, infantile paralysis; the mosquito all kinds of deadly fevers; the bedog carries germs from one person to another.
Flit spray clears the house in a few
minutes of disease bearing flies, mos quitoes, bed bugs, cockroaches, ants, moths, fleas and silverfish. It searches out the cracks where insects hide and breed, destroying their eggs. Flit spray kills moths and their larvae which eat holes. Extensive tests showed that Flit spray did not stain the most delicate fabrics. Flit is clean and easy to use, death to insects but harmless to mankind It is economy to use Flit and avoid discase. For sale everywhere.
