YEAR
Car Thieves Lose Again.
During 1926, cars atolon in the United Statos totalled 95,225. 01 these, 85,114 were recovered, so that thieves escaped with only 11 per cent, of their loot, T.
These figures contrast with thefts of 1918, when of 27,446 cars stalon, 21,078, or 70 por cont.,' were recovered, and 21 por cent. were never found.
Figures compiled by the Na- tional Automobile Dealers' As- sociation show a steadily increas- ing number of "car thefts every year, and a correspondingly big- ger porcentage of recoveries.
The millions of new cars going on the road each year increase the opportunities for theft: but botter police methods have halved the thieves' chances of getting away with stolen cars.

THE FINAL TEST OF THE MOTOR CAR.
Put Through Exhaustive Tests on Proving Ground. [By Israel Klein,]
· Engineers aren't through with an automobile after it is pro- duced.
In fact, they've just begun tinkering with it, finding its faults and Its promises, in an effort to improve the next product.
For this purpose some of the large companies have what are called "proving grounds."
The General Motors "proving ground," at Milford, Mich., for in- stance, has about 20 miles of private highway laid out so as to represent every road condition that the average driver meets. There are hills ranging from 7 per cent. grades to as high as 24 per cent. There are concrete and gravel roads.
There is a level concrete stretch without a kink or a twist in it,
Forty-five degree embankments at curves permit drivers to keep their cars going at highest speed, to test their stamina, while the straightaway and. "bath-tub," shown in lower view, afford other im- portant tests. These are views of the General"
