MOST TANGLED CITY IN THE WORLD.
WHERE IS SYDNEY HEADING?
(By Charles S. Clancy.)
Australia, as the fifth largest motoring country, in the world, is expanding so rapidly that in time aho will overtake other" countries, and will fall in alongsido Amorica and Canada as the largest owner of motor cars.

On January 1, 1927, the esti- mated number of cars in Australia was 302,416, and 69,186 trucks.
Such a large percentage gain Illustrates the giant strides that the industry making in Australia.
Saturation point in sales has not yet been rouched, and is not likely to be reached for some years to
come.
A few enterprising garagemen have opened up their limited floor space to house the cars that can't find road space. Hundreds of hunted owners can't find parking space in the few streets which have been set aside for such p purpose.
Conditions are getting worse daily, with no attempt by the au- thorities to catch up with the pro-
The trade expects that the pre- | blem sont year will be a record one for sales.
The trading-in problem is a serious one as inflated values on used cars, so as to claim a sale, have left in some cases a very small margin of profit.
Apart from profits, whether small or large, sales continue to elimb, which threatens further serious trafic disorders as the result of this continued expansion. Although the increase in motors quoted above is spread all over Australia, the greater portion of the percentage increase is confined | to the capital cities.
Sydney perhaps is the worst hit capital in the Commonwealth,
Nowhere are such traffic dif- ficulties experienced as in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide have nothing like the congestion of Sydney.
It is running away from them. Apparently they intend to let it get well away and then ban cars in city streets altogether.
The conservative idea of per- mitting the large bulk of our trams to use up the centre of our narrow city streets in this age of progress is ridiculous, and must impede the attempt to secure ultimate efficiency in traffic administration.

The low prices which have made Hudson and Essex fam- ous have largely been achieved through the simple process of using inventory materials quicker and getting a greater out- put from plant machinery than is commonly done in industry, Mechanical conveyance of materials has been developed to an unusual degree. So quickly are materials consumed in the unusually efficient manufacturing processes of the Hpd- son Motor Car Company that the public actually goes riding in Hudson and Essex Cars before the commitments for most of the raw materials are due for payment.

Congestion is so bad now that visitors from the country, motor- ing through to Sydney, stop at Parramatta and hire" a driver to bring them on to their destination. Even, among Sydney drivers there

In Sydney, though, the problem confronting the authorities is a gigantic one. With this know ledge you would think that the au- thorities would look around for a solution.
