Straight to the Mark of Public Favour
Hitting the bull's eye" with its records of success-the Firestone Full-Size. Gum-Dipped Balloon has set today's highest mark in tyre quality.
Full-Size Balloons are acknowledged to be the easiest riding tyres ever built, and it is due to the Firestone process of Gum-Dipping that the thin sidewalls are strong enough to stand the added flexing strain of this type.
Long mileage, car-protection and low petrol cost, are further advantages.

Semi-Automatic Spark Control.
Not a few motorists have care| which cannot be operated on hard pulla, with wide open throttle, with-| out their engines. "pinking" or developing the light, sharp knock known as detonation and sometimes referred to as the fuck knock. Some of these engines which will run smoothly, just after having been cleaned of carbon, will begin to "pink" after a few hundred miles of service. This trouble is general- ly due to the compression pressure attained in the cylinders being too high to permit normal combusion of the fuel used; pinking being caused by the excessive pressure of abnormal explosion waves set up in the burning mixture. Seme motor- ists seek to reduce pinking by re- ducing compression, using an extra gasket between the block and the Question-My --- Car has cylinder head to increase the clear- automatic spark advance and still ance space and use ordinary gaso- there is a spark lever on the stċer- line as fuel, but there is anothering wheel. Such anti-knock gasolines are now, ob- tainable almost anywhere and cost but a few cents a gallon more than ordinary gasoline. Indeed it is highly probable, that in the not dis- tant future, ali gasoline sold will possess anti-knock properties. Un- til that time comes, however, it is usually possible to prevent pinking in an engine which is subject to it, by running it on some brand of non- detonating gasoline, but it should be remembered. that the use of these special gasolines is no re- medy for mechanical or pre- ignition knocks, but only for genu- ine fuel kerosene involving detonn- tion.
"Running in" a New Engine. Question: I expect to buy a new car very soon. What suggestions can you give me na to "breaking in" the engine. How much oil should be mixed with the gasoline and how long should this method of lubrica- tion be kept up? How often should valves be ground?

Answer. The type of ignition control on your car is more usually spoken of as semi-automatic. The. automatic device regulates sparkl advance only through the ordinary:
for all driving range, that is engine speeds made use of in ordinary service, but it is probably not designed so as to give sufficient retard for safe eranking or to give. sufficient advance to permit the maximum speed of the engine to be obtained. The hand lever is provided to give full retard and to give extreme advance in,ease very high speed is desired.

Larger Tyres.
Answer. Yes, 33 x 5.77 inch semi-ballon tyres will take the place of the 32 x 4 inch tyres now on your car, but before adopting them, you better have one of these larger casings. tried on both a front and a rear wheel and inspect carefully to make sure that they will not run too close to the wheel housings or mudguards, with the springs deflected, way down and chains on the tyres and that there is no danger of their interfering otherwise. You can soon tell if the larger tyres are going to re as to run- duce the angle to which the front engine, but wheels are turned in steering, in a general way, a car right enough to be disadvantageous. from the factory should not Steering movements will probably be run at more than 25 m.p.h. for he appreciably harder with these the first thousand miles. Engine oversize tyres, but not enough so oil should be drained and renewed as to prevent their use, after the first two hundred miles and more frequently than normally for several more fillings. One pint of oil to each 5 gallons of gasoline will be about right. After a thou- sand miles there will be little ad- vantage in mixing oil with the fuel. If the valves are tight when you get the car, they should not require grinding under 5,000 miles and may go longer without it. Do not have them ground until competent ins- pection shows that they actually leak to a material extent. Un necessary grinding of valves is to be avoided.

Answer. Yes, this will be a logical thing to do, if you find that the cylinders are still perfectly smooth and are not much out of round,
