“BUNK."

HISTORY OF SLANG TERM.

One of the earliest of many American enrichments of the Eng- lish tongue was the word "bun- kumor "Buncombe," as it used to be spelt in the middle of the last century out of compliment to the county of that name in North Carolina whose representative had earned lasting distinction by the facility with which he could pro- duce fluent clap-trap.

A land which has learned to hustle has brought the original buncombe down to "bunk" (as in the celebrated Henry Ford aphor- Jem "History is bunk"), but though America has shortened the name there are no signs that Amarien la reducing the output of the actu- al article. Bunk is exemplified, for instance, with absoluto bril- Hance in the letter which an American film-producer who lạ now in this country has addressed to our Home Secretary.

Encouraged, perhaps, by rum- ours of Mr. William Joynson- Hicks's own associations with films ("Jix the boy for work. Jix the boy for play," and so forth), the American expert has asked our. Home Secretary (who must be ra- ther surprised to find himself ad- dressed as "your Excellency") to assist him in finding a representa- tive Englishman to play in the film which the expert is about to pro- duce.

Our

"

Home Secretary is, of course, by virtue of his office in touch with a wideish range of Englishmen; on the one hand he is in contact with the Cabinet, and on the other he is technically res ponsible for the contents of his Majesty's jails, "But the kind of. Englishman he is naked to select is a very special kind, so a wide experience is very necessary. The selected hero has to be the real representative of the spiritual forces of his respective country"" (after dealing with, England the film export will set to put the same modest request for assistance to. the Governments of Germany, Russia, Italy, and Spain), and he has to be "an artistic ambassador" of all that is "cherished and en- couraged by the leaders, of his country.”

One would hardly have thought that all that, and the added assis tance of Home Secretary was need- ed in order to make a more alm. Is it uncharitable to suggest that it is not really necessary in order to make the film but that it might very well help in selling Itif aar one in this country, from the Home Secretary downwards, were green enough to pay the least dorf- ous attention to such a proposal,
