THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

PACKARD

PACKARD cars have always appealed to, the fortunate, classes- to those who know and who love good things.

#

"That Packard sales, in 1926, sub- stantially exceeded in number those of any other car in the world of equal or higher price is, therefore, not surprising.

Clearly, Packard has retained first place in the affections of those best fitted to judge quality-diplomats, bankers, business leaders-connois- seurs able to appréciate surpassing merit.

MOTORING SUPPLEMENT.

CORRESPONDENCE,

Kowloon Suggestions.

To the Editor, Hongkong

Telograph.]

Sir-Permit me as on owner driver for many years in England, Malaya and this Colony to make a fow remarka

"Motoring Matters" in your valued paper with a view to better and safer driving in this Colony."

on

All the Ford buses in Kowloon are fitted with left hand steering, and if the driver of such a bus were to signal to following traffic when overtaking another vehicle, the driver of the following vehicle could not possibly see the signial, Recently a motor cyclist met with a nasty accident due to the fact that he was following behind a bus which sud- denly, swerved to the right to over- take another, and the result was the motor cyclist banged into the bus. Of course it was no fault of the cyclist. Personally I was saved from several accidents in that man- ner because I had efficient brakes. on my car. I think the traffle au- thorities should compel all motor vehicles with left hand steering to fit fome sort o..a "Warning Signal." At the moment there are severnl good and reliable "Warning Sign- als" manufactured in England.

Buses along Nathan Road in Kowloon do not stop as near to tho off side as possible, and I have many times seen them stop several feet away from the off side thus block- ing the way of the following traf fic. This pactice is not allowed in England, and the sooner the police stop the buses from stopping in that manner the better for all con cerned.

Children in Kowloon seem to be fond of playing, football on the road and often they run across the road chasing after -balls with-1 .out looking around

whether ing along or not, and this is done so suddenly that a motorist meeting with such a altuation will have lit tle time to apply his brakes in order to avoid runing over the child.. Per- haps at some future date the. Goy- ernment will think of providing. sultable playgrounds for poor chil- dren, but in the meantime what shall we do to make motoring safer in this colony and also to make play- ing for the poor children safer?

I shall be much obliged if some one will tell me what is the proper motoring signals used in Hong Kong and Kowloon. The present aystem seems to be all wrong, for Instead of signalling to the traf- fic behind of your intentions one is supposed to give his signal to the traffic police in front of you. Can- not we adopt the system as used in England? We heard of the traffic rules to be circulated to every Hiconced driver, but" where are they?

Those of us who drive a good deal In Hongkong and Kowloon experience ડૉ. very serious habit of the Chinese pedestrians walking right in the middle of the road without paying any attention to the blowing of horns. In cases of accidents the motorist seems to get more blame than the pedestrian, and I think it will be for the good of all concerned if a sort of a "Safety First" cam- paign were to be started by the Au tomobile Association with the help of the police.

The matter of headlight dimming when passing another vehicle at night has long been condemned in England and other European coun- tries. In Singapore no motor car will be passed for registration by the police anlcas some sort of anti- dazzle device in fitted to the head- lights, failing which frosted glass will be accepted. Cannot we fol- low Singapore's example and ba more up-to-date in matters motor- ing in this Colony.

Until the above mentioned dan- gers are removed motoring in this colony will always be a dangerous thing to indulge in.

Thanking you for your valuable space-Yours, etc.,
