FOR COMFORT. A Few Useful Hints.
By Israel Klain.]
Body builders are improving the seating of the automobile with better arrangement of springs, for the greater comfort of the pas sengera,
But the springs below the body, and the tyres, remain the essential foundations of comfortable riding. Attention must be given them re gularly if touring is to be easy and enjoyable.
#
As efficient shock absorbers, the tyres depend on the amount of air pressure in them. It was for their high shock-absorbing qualities. that balloon tyres were introduced.
The principle of balloons is not the resiliency of their thin walls, as opposed to the stiffer fabric walls of the former type of tyres. It's the lower air pressure that. makes this type of tyre the better shock absorber.
It has been discovered, however, that the extremely low air pres- "sure of 22 pounds average, as first advised for balloons, is too low for efficient riding. It wore down the tyres too soon. Now as high as 36 pounds. pressure is suggested for comfortable
with riding balloons,
If high pressure tyros are used on your ear, air pressure may be reduced for comfortable riding only at the cost of quicker wear on the casings.

The grease will wear out soon, but the graphite will remain as a good lubricant between the moving
parts. Oil may be applied to the

Lightweights.
(By Kenneth Fraser.]
Present discussions amongst motor cyclists as to the possible advent of the £20 motor-cycle brings to the fore the subject of the lightweight and its compare- tive advantages and disadvantages. There are two schools of thought

The thieves were discovered in the garage of the Polhill Hotel, Hal- stead, near Sevenoaka, about 2 a.m. by the proprietor, Mr. E. G.turally, and he may quite possibly Peasley. The men, and a third who was at the driving-wheel of the waiting car, were all roughly dress-

Of course, there is no need for. any argument as to the relativo advantages of heavy and light motor-cycles, because they are in- ended to fill two distinct purposes. The heavy is for the man who may wish to go anywhere with a side- Mr. Pensley shouted, and the men car, complement of passengers, and rushed from the garage into their baggage; the medium-heavy is for car and moved off. The police officer at Knockholt sent on the alarm to Bromley, seven miles away. This part of Bromley is a bottle-neck an ideal position for a road barring, as has been sugested in The Daily Mail:
The £20 Motor Cycle.
It is open to doubt whether the. £20 lightweight would be a success, and I base my doubts on this fact, that the man who is likely to want such a machine is just the type who normally wants a passenger outfit.

-For-in-
If a man is in the happy posi- tion of being able to keep two machines, then, of course, there is no argument; but the would-be rider who wants to obtain general utility with the least possible out. lay has to consider all these things. 1 As for bringing new recruits into the ranks of motor-cycling, certainly the £20 machine would be very useful indeed. But I cannot" help thinking that it would almost invariably be in the manner of a stepping-stone, the new recruit finding after a senson at the most that, he wanted something more powerful, whether for solo vork or not. In any case, however, the lightweight at this price would serve a good purpose to motor-cycl- ing. When it will come is another matter.
In a recent article I entered on the subject of the limit of lowness in price, suggesting that that limit was practically reached to-day. If I am wrong, and manufacturera can still farther cut cost without' appreciably lowering, standards of quality, then, of course, good luck' to them.-Ex.
