By courtesy of the American members of the staff, Reuter's cor- respondent visited the Canton Christian College (Lingnani Uni- *versity). yesterday afternoon. The College was closed down last month owing to impossible de- mands made by the Labour Union for the benefit of its members who were in the employ of the Collega. Of the 1,000 students of the Uni- versity, not more than fifty have taken up the support of the Labour Union. The Inbour. Union in Canton still exercised very con- siderable authority, and has so far withstood all the efforts of the student body and the University to reopen its doors,

A small force of armed soldiers keeps close guard on the College campus, and no one, neither the Fresident of the institution, nor the poorest student, is permitted entrance without a pass, in order, that no trouble-makers may gain access and instigate more trouble. "
The Lingnan University is pos- sibly, the largest "institution of its kind in China, covering as it does an area of some three hundred Acres or more, and providing for the higher education of one of China's greatest cities. The en- rolment during the last quarter reached the highest point on-re- No student is allowed to cord. join without having a fairly good knowledge of English, and this necounts for the comparatively small number of undergraduates on enrolment at the time of the University's closing-Reuter.
