There was a large gathering at the Chamber of Commerce meet-ties amongst the ollicers, crew or ing held at St. Andrew's lall, City Hall, when Mr. D. G. M. Bernard (Chairman) proposed that Mr. J. Owen Hughes be nominated for appointment as the representative of the Chamber of Commerce on the Legislative Council for four years.

Although there were no casual- passengers, of the 3.8. The name of only one candidate is beford us to-day, Mr. J. Owen Hughes, proposed by myself, and seconded by Hon. Mr. Hynes. Ir accordance with the rules of the Chamber voting will be by a show of hands.

It was extremely fortunate that at that early hour very few of the passengers were up or astir on the bont deck, otherwise the incident might have had more serious results.

However, it appears probable that within three months the Nationalist forces at Hankow will be at Chengchow, Honan, just this aide of the Yellow River, on the intersection of the Lunghai Railway.

This is the strategic point which they must capture, else their revolution comes to an igno- minious end. Whether from that point they will be able to carry on and capture Peking remains to be seen.

The Crux of the Situation.

Wuhsinkuan Pass, a tunnel on the Peking-Hankow Railway, is naturally the most important point of all upon which the Southerners must maintain their hold. This is in their possession now. They have advanced on the railway half the distance through the province of Honan and they profess to be confident that they will advance the rest of the distance to the edge of the Yellow River.
