The crux of the whole situx- tlon unquestionably rests with London, and any improvement there would act as a tonic to marine insurance" throughout the World. The ramifications of un- derwriters in the United Kingdom 'extend to al lands and amongst all peoples, at present to the detri- ment of rates. Whilst admiring their enterprise, there are times, when we cannot but feel, I speak for our local field only, that it would be better for all concorned were they to obtain a more accurate appreciation of the risks they so lightly undertake at the lowest of rates.
In addition to the dimculties of marine insurance generally, we have of course to face a serious" fall in premium income arising from the decrease in trada' which

No Undue Strain Likely.
It is difficult to predict what lies ahead of us but thanks to the cautious policy adopted in the past, the Company is in a position comfortably to weather a fow lean years without feeling any undue strain.
Turning now to the accounts it will be seen that the premium 1- come for the year 1926 shows an increase of approximately $335,- 000 over that for the preceding year, this is entirely due to the lower rate of exchange, viz:- 1/11..at which we converted our sterling income on the 31st December last, compared with 2/4% for the previous year. The final balance of this Account is less by the sum of $245,718.36 than that for the year 1924. The rating for Tosses and for commis- slon and charges work out at 69.98% respectively, as against 59.156 and 20.34% for the year 1924...
The balance at credit of working account for 1926 is $2,351,206.94 as against $1,970,269,66 for 1925. This increase is also due to the
fall in sterling exchange and it must therefore be remembered that it will require more dollars | to pay for sterling losses. This a further working account has tivelve months to run and, though it is early yet to forecast the final result, I may say we anticipate it will be satisfactory having retard to existing conditions.
Sound Assets.
Our assets expressed in sterling stand at £1,147,200-0-0 as against £1,229,661-3-7 last year, a decrease of £92,461-2-10. But on the other hand in Hongkong Dollars they show an increase of $1,315,427.08. Both fall and rise are due to exchange.
The underwriting suspense account is in a very sound position and stands at £118,210-18-6 as compared with £103,308-16-8 at the same date last year, an increase of £14,802-1-10. It is essential that we maintain this Reserve in a strong position no as to be able to meet all demands that can pos- sibly be made on it.
