SPARK CONTROL.

Some Useful Hints.

When the car develops a knock, especially when labouring against a grade or at starting, it is not al- ways at fault.

By Capt. D. de Normanville.] The fair sex has again been to the fore in the motor cycling world, two lady riders having accomplished very creditable per- This knock is called an ignition formances. As this works out at ten miles for a penny, I should think it must be a record for economy in any observed trial.

The machine favoured by Mrs. Grenfell was a Francis-Barnett, with a 1.47 h.p. Villiers engine.

frish Girl's Feat.

1. Another very greditable achievement was that. of Miss Rence Smyth, an Irish girl, of Londonderry, who covered 1,000 miles in Ulster in live days-an excellent average for the 21 hp. Raleigh she was using. Shel maintained

without schedule trouble or adjustment.

SMALLEST AUTO-

MOBILE.

Many drivers forget that there i apark lever at their steering wheels, to be manipulated at just such, emergencies.

When the engine is speeded up, But the spark must be advanced. when it slows down, as on labour- ing up, a hill or in starting, the' spark must be retarded so that the

nition may be timed properly with the compression of the fuel in each cylinder.

Most power is obtained when the park ignites the compressed gas while the piston is at the very top of its stroke.

But when the engine is running fast, the piston has a tendency to. be well on its downward stroke before the gas has had time to ex- plode. This is due not only to the speed and momentum of the piston and flywheel, but to the fact that there is a slight delay in the ux- plosion of the gas, even after the spark has ignited it.

The smallest practical automobile in the world is a two-passenger electric rondster weighing only 200 pounds, having a wheel-base of 02

In other words, there is first inched nnd a speed of 10 miles awlint engineers call a "dash point,”. hour. It is owned by the New York when the gas is ignited, and then. Ellison company. ·

comes the "fire point," when the gas explodes.

It is ingenuously designed to accomm¬ dane hyu full-grown people with plenty of head and leg room, In driving you will find it steers as easily as a bicycle, with perfect control provided by mechanical four-wheel brakes.

The Erskine climbs on 11% grade in high, gear, it attains ho-mile speed quickly and smoothly. Itsadvanced, L-head

engine accelerates from 5 to 25 miles speed in eight and one-half seconds. This little aristocrat of the fine car held also offers an advanced type of operating economy-tests show 30 to 35 miles per Imperial gallon of petrol-1000 miles per gallon of oil

There is loss of power if the ex- plosion takes place after the piston has started down. So the remedy is to advance the spark so that the flash will occur slightly before the piston reaches the top, and the fire will take place just as the piston is ready to go down,

If the spark is advanced too far, however, the fire, or explosion, oc- curs before the piston arrives at the top, making it necessary for the other pistons and the flywheel to force this one on its way up against the force of the exploded gas, thus causing the well-known 'knock.

This occurs mostly when the en- gine is slowed down by the force of its pull up hill, or against the entire weight of the car on start- ing. When this happens, the posi tion of the spark that had been proper now becomes too far ad- vanced and the knock occurs.

The remedy is to retard the spark, but only enough to overcome the knock. Retarding the spark too far causes loss of power.

Control of the spark, however, should always follow the throttle control. That is, the engine should never be speeded up by advancing the spark, or slowed down by re- tarding it. The throttle should do that..

Then, as the engine varies its speed slower or faster, the spark lever should be manipulated ac- cordingly..

MOTOR TAXATION.

Compulsory Insurance.

Boston, April 8. The high cost of the compulsory insurance law in Massachusetts, the first state to adopt this form of au- tomobila legislation, may force the authorities to offset this by & gaso- lino tax,

Massachusetts in one of the four remaining states that are still free of the gasoline tax.

Now a bill, that has great promise of passing, proposes a uniform ro gistration Ico of 83 on overy Bu Lomobile and a tax of 3 cents a gallon for the gas he uses.
