It will be within the knowledge of those who care to read these lines that after our last automobile show in London a terrible calamity in the shape of the coal strike befell

Difficulties of Coal Strike.
This strike began early in May and lasted until early in November and even now the output of coal has not reached the figure which is necessary to give us our supplies at a reasonble cost.
After stocks of coul were ex- hausted, automobile production was in danger of coming to a standstill, and, indeed, this would have been the case but for a limited supply. from foreign sources.
It will be apparent therefore that the Industry suffered from a partial paralysis during the greater part of 1926, and production costs have also been heavily increased by reason of the hold-up in the industries which feed the automobile plants with raw material and component marts:
Record Show at Olympia.
It was therefore with genuine surprise and satisfaction that we found ourselves able to stage, in October, 1926, one of the best and most successful shows ever held at Olympia.
It is true that a few companies were unable to weather the storm and also true that a few others have shown anfavourable balance sheets. But, nevertheless, our producing
HUGE SUM FOR ROADS.
New Jersey is planning to spend $140,000,000 during the next six years for highway improvement and construction. The routes to be included in the programme are still under consideration.
A Twelve Years' Record
of Endurance
November 14th, 1926 was the twelfth anni- versary of the manufacture of Dodge! Brothers Motor Car.
An evenful twelve years! During that time Dodge Brothers manufactured -1,800,000 motor "ears so enduringly and honestly built that over 90 per cem are still in use. Through these twelve years. Dodge Brothers Motor Cars have been more and more widely used as time has passed because the standards of sturdiness and stability, which always marked them. have continually been advanced.
1927 Outlook Best Ever,
The orders taken at the show by
most, if not all, the exhibi greatly exceeded their anticipati and dispelled any doubts as to |cessful business in 1927.
The problem which remains is that of steady production to meet demands, and I understand that no fears are entertained on this ac- count.
Expansion of oversens business is also being dealt with in vigorous fashion and on carefully conceived
lines.
Altogether the automobile busi- ness in Great Britain is facing futtire with optimism the and unshaken confidence.
No Tariff on Tyres. With regard to tyres, we find this curious anomaly that whilst auto- mobiles and all other parts pertain in thereto are subject to i tarif yet tyres are exempted. The rea- son for this is difficult to under- stand but any analysis would be out of place here.
It is, nevertheless, pleasing to record that although British tyre, manufacturers are faced with very keen competition from foreign countries, and notably from those with depreciated currencies, yet they are doing good business and look forward with confidence to bet- ter business in the future."
RUN BOTH WAYS.
The double-headed electric fire and wrecking tracks will safeguard the lives of motorists going through the new Holland tubes in New York. The trucks are made with drivers' seats, stearing apparatus and cranos at both ends, so they can be driven back and forth without turning,
