BRITAIN'S DRINK BILL.

£301,300,000 ON LIQUOR LAST YEAR.

A drink bill for 1926 which is only a few millions short of the interest on the National Debt, is the estimate of the United King- dom Alliance.

In his annual statement, Mr. George B. Wisan, political and literary secretary, says that he es timates the amount spent on in- toxicating liquors in Great Britain during 1926 at about 4301.300.000, as against about £315,000,000 in 1995,

"The expenditure per head of the population," he observes, "was, therefore, in 1926, about £6 178., as against £7 4s. in 1925."

Notwithstanding the industrial conditions, the expediture on al eoholic liquors shows a reduction, he points out, of only 4% per cent. over 1925, with a similar redaction in consumption measured in terms of absolute alcohol.
