1,400 MILES IN A MOTOR-BOAT.
CHUNGKING EVACUATION.
A correspondent sends the fol- lowing exciting account of the evacuation of Chungking to the N. C. Daily News:
WER
The motor boat. Mei Lu purchased about two months ago by the Standard Oll Co. from Messrs. Barry and Dodwell, Ltd., Chungking, and when it becume evident that there would be an evacuation sooner or later, it was decided by the company to hold her at Chungking as the last ship on which the remaining few then in port could make their escape, when conditions became neces- sary. Such action on their part should be greatly commended by the American government. For weeks previous, the boat was put into shape, crew (both deck and engine) were hired and, every- thing made ready to leave as soon as the American Consul gave the word. On March 30 word was given to pull out into the stream and make ready to leave as soon as the Consul heard from the mis- sionaries in Chengtu and Yachow, if they were going to come out or not.
The Chinese crew, as soon 19 they saw what was doing, at once made demands for an extra month's wages before they would leave, to which the company would
not agree.
Foreigners Volunteer.
The Chinese left no doubt with the idea that the boat could not be moved without them, but they had not reckoned on the foreign passengers, who at once volunteer- ed to assist the foreign engineer, Mr. Heileland. A deck crew were hired without trouble, the old crew having left under coercion of the engineroom staff, and Messrs. R. E. Laker and Jones (both of the Standard Oil Co.), Mr. Ozorio (of the American Oriental Bank), Mr. A. W. Peake and Mr. F .C. Flack, the latter two being British, volunteered to assist the engineer in the engine-room, taking two- hour shifts. This is the first time in history that any vessel has been taken through the Gorges and rapids such a distance by a civilian crew, most of whom never had been in an engineyoom, and the larger part of whom accountants in various firms in All the more credit Chungkinh.
are
to the gentlemen! The distance from Chungking, to Shanghai is over 1,400 miles.
A Poet Too.
The company included a ship'a poet, from whom at least two odes appeared to his era.lit during the trip, and a foreign steward (Mr. Doolan, of the Standard Oil Co.), whose labour would have done cre- dit to n Pacific liner, and to whom a very large part of the pleasant
ess of the trip is duc.
