TRAM TRACKS.

IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES

EXPLAINED.

New constructional work, for the extension of the Percival Street track and for the improvo- ment of the present turning point for Western Market-bound ears, wus explained in an interview yesterday by the Manager of the Hongkong Tramway Company, Mr. L.C.F. Bellamy,

As has been announced in last week's Gazette, it is proposed to lay down approximately 145 yards of new track to carry the present single track at Percival Street to beyond the point where it now curves into the Tram Depot, at Russell Street. This work is ac- tuated by the existence of the new Lee Theatre, patrons of which will be enabled to board late trams at a point near the on- trance..

With regard

the second scheme, this is designed to reliere trafic congestion and obviate the trouble and inconvenience of turning back cars at the Western Market. By means of a new curve joining up the line through Mor- rison Street with the truck for cast-bound trams on the water- front, cara will be enabled ta turn- back from the Western Market, In- stead of backing and changing over to the other track as is now the case.

MOTOR ACCIDENT.

ONE KILLED AND EIGHT SERIOUSLY INJURED.

A motor lorry, the ownership of which has not yet been established, went over a cliff at Shaukiwan yes" terday afternoon at 3 p.m., causing the death of one woman passenger and serious injuries to elght men who were also travelling in the vehicle.

So for as can be ascertained, the lorry was en-route from Stanley to Shaukiwan, when approaching the turn near the tram terminus, the steering gear failed and the vehicle went over the cliff at high speed.
