MOTORING SUPPLEMENT. SATURDAY, APRIL 23, 1927.
WHY MOTOR RACING IS NECESSARY.
Real Trial only by Super-Strain.
What was the real purpose of Major H. O. D. Segrave, in build- ing the "Mystery Z"? What mechanical problems does he intend to solre with this, the highest-powered, fustest uutomobile eur conceivedi ? These questions, of interest to every motorist, are answered in the fol lowing story, written by the man who drove the car on its trial runs at Daytona Beach, U.S.A.
By Major H. O. D. Segrave. miles per hour with these supor Now York, March 20th.-Thoo-brakos it will tako mo 2 miles to rios and newly designed equip. stop. With ordinary four-whool mout that may revolutionize mo. brakes I should have to take five tordom will be thoroughly tested miles to stop.. by the two-engined, thousand horse-power racing car that I have designed and brought to America.
Now Alloy on Trial.
We have new alloys in the engine to be tested. An alloy that Now devices for the automobile will stand up under vibrations at can be given a real trial only by such a speed will last on an ordi- subjecting them to super-strain.nary car for nearly 20 years. One such tost is that of a tyro which will strotch at high speed. This, it is believed, will eliminate to a great degred the road shocks that come with high speed.
The tyres on my racer, the "Mystery Z are covered with one-sixty-fourth of an inch of rub ber. At 200 miles an hour the centrifugal force will stretch each tyre an inch and a half. We have brought 50 of those tyres with us. There also is now method of attaching tyres to the wheels that will be tried out when I raco against time on the Florida beach.
Wind Wastes Power.
Wind resistance is another factor we are trying to cut down,
The spokes in the wheels om- body a new design that we hope will prove much more satisfactory than presont day wire wheels.
The stooring mechanism is an. othor arrangement that will prove interosting. One can stoer the car at 100 miles per hour with almoet a thought and no matter what contour the road might take the front wheels tond to hug the ridge or top.
The car, costing well into $100,- 000, is practically useless for any- thing but expërimouting.

1,
If the car goes much faster than 200 miles an hour, I do not believe it will stay on the ground and if a strong gust of wind strikes it from the side it will shake me up considerably.
The car can run on 1 or 2 on- gines. Proposals in Britain's
New Bill....
COMPULSORY IN- SURANCE.
رہا
The Road Vehicles Bill, through. which the Government propospa to bring up to date all existing Acts governing the use of the roads by mechanically propelled vehicles, has now been printed in final draft form, and will shortly bo circulated for discussion among the public.
The Bill will provide for the total abolition of the speed limit of 20 miles an hour which now applies to all light motor vehicles. But it is proposed to retain a spood limit of 15 miles an hour for heavy vehicles, such as lorries motor-coaches, and so forth.
At prosent these vehicles are supposed to conform to a limit of 12 miles an hour. Apart from the question of public safety, it is ro- cognised that the most serious road damago is done by heavy solid-tyred vehicles, travelling at too great a speed,
Instead of penalising drivers of light vehicles for the technical offence of exceeding 20 miles por hour, the Bill will, propose that! rockless or loo fast driving should be checked by the police in the following way.
Rear Lights for Cyclists. A charge might be proferred against a motor driver either for 1. Driving to the public dangor,
or
2. Driving at a spood excessivo
in the circumstances.
By introducing the second and nuw offence the Ministry of Transport sooks to moot the criti- cism that drivers will be at the morey of a country policeman's opinion on what is a very serious charge,
