THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

METHODIST RALLY.

150 GATHER AT WANCHAI CHURCH.

&

A suggestion emanating from the Rev. J. C. Knight Anstey, the Resident Minister and Chaplain, for a means of bringing Hong kong Wesleyans together at the Wanchai Wealoyan Methodist Chapel, the only chapel of that denomination in Hongkong, bore fruit yesterday, when over 150 Reople, including Service, men, attended what was called a "Great Methodist Rally" in the Church yesterday evening.

An excellent tea was provided, for which many assisted with the catering, after which a public mecting was held, when an in- teresting address was given by the Rev. Edgar Dewatoe, chairman of the South China District. The promoter, the Rev. Knight Anstey presided.

THURSDAY,

they would find that every place of antartainment was crowded to the doors. There was also the class warfare about which 80 much

showa bitterness was

among parties of their own country.

People, young and old, at the. present time, wore waiting as they had waited since the days of Wes- ley, for a strong, spiritual note which would give them something new. They were restless because they had not found that for which their souls were seaking. "You and I have," he added, "or we ought to have a message" for our people at Home."

After referring to China trou- bles, and speaking specially to the Service men present, he said if In the face of Chinese opposition they had to take a certain atand, they would not go far wrong if they kept their Methodist life and strength always before their eyes.

Concluding be said the charac- toristic note of Methodism was experience, Christian experience, living experience, of Jesus Christ. They had a message of love .nvi The arrangements were in the good, not only for themselves b hands of a capable Social Com- for the Chinese and the whole of mittee, composed of Messrs. Included in the programme were solos, "Open the Grites of the Temple" by Mrs. C. W. Bong and "Lord God of Abraham" by Mr. A. P. Glanville. Community singing of old Methodist hymns which was a popular feature was led by Mr. Glover.

The First Chapel,

There was on view an interest. ing picture of the first Methodist Chapel. This was called "The Foundery," and was acquired for the use of Methodists in 1799. The building was the King's Foundary, Moorfields, London, previously used as a place where Government cannons were cast. It stood in the locality of Windmill Hill, now known as Windmill Street, a street which runs parallel with City Road and abuts the North West corner. of Finsbury Square.

During the evening, greetings were from Methodists read by the chairman from the Rev. W. Russell Makby, D. D., President of the Wesleyan Metho- dist Conference, the Rev. H.

Also on view was a very valuable first edition of "Wesley's Note" on the New Testament.

Before each hymn, the chairman read out a short and interesting. account of it's origin, and some of the tunes sung dated back to the, year 1000.

When at Home people asked him, "Where did you meet your wife?" to which question the correct answer was, "She overtook me." (laughter). Many of his happiest memories were associat- ed with the church, and it was en- couraging to note those who had stood by the place so well during very difficult years.

Referring to questions among Wesleyans at Home, he spoke nf women ministers. "Personally," he added, "should welcome women ministers as colleagues of mine." Referring to the question of Union of Methodists he said he in thought that all Methodists their hearts knew there ought to be and there would be in its own good time a Union of Methodists parties. It was coming as surely as the tides, wore rolling in.
