THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH,

METHODISM.

ITS ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT.

(BY REV. J. KNIGHT ANSTEY).

A proposal is on foot to hold A great rally of Hongkong Methodists on Wednesday, 20th April. The rally is to be held in the Wesleyan Methodist Church at Wanchal. Details are advor tised in this issue of the S. C. M. Post In view of this it will be of Interest to give a brief outline of the Methodist movement.

Methodism may be described as the name which applies to a great group of Protestant Evange tical Churches which form world-wide brotherhood number- ing thirty-five million adherents, chiefly in the British Empire and America, having amlated Churches and missionary organi sations in every country on the globe.

All owe their origin to the great evangelical revival in the eighteenth century, in connexion with which the name of John

While these wonderful results, with the quickening they have given to the older Churches, owe their origin, humanly speaklog, to one great spiritual genitis, he was nobly and notably seconded by his brother Charles, the prolific hymn writer, and the oloquent preacher and evangelist Whitefield.

John Wesley. Much controversy has arisen in ecclesiastical circlos over the question of John Wesley's relation to the Church of England, and as to whether Methodists in establish- inga communion outside that) Church have been true followers of bheir leader, who was an devout A Churchman. But the facts are quite simple. Wesley was a High Churchman, a clergyman of the Church of England, Fellow of Lincoln College, Oxford, and Greek and President of Disputa- tions in that University. His conversion in 1738, which led him to regard the life of an adult Christian as beginning with an inward experience of God and not at baptism or confirmation, was a transforming experience which became the starting point of many subsequent acts leading by logicul steps to virtual separation from the English State Church.

Popular Education.

Methodism has combined the mystical and practical elements of religion by emphasising the neces- aity of a personal experience of God finding its logical expression in the right conduct of all human relations, personal and social. Wesley himself was a mystic, yet an extraordinarily practical man and a true pioneer in many forms of social service. Himself scholar, he was both an enthusiast for wide mental culture and a pioneer of popular education.

With his own pen he did much to place within the reach of the common people knowledge that had hitherto been the privilege of the few. He produced 238 original works and edited or published extracts from a hundred others. His "Journal" is an English classic, and his "Ser. mons." quite apart from their theological value, are a

Wesley was an ardent social reformer, and the Methodist Churches of to-day are second to none in leadership in temperance and social reform, yet so based upon genuine Christian experience to avoid such measures ultimately become anti-social

This same balance is manifested in the way in which the brother- hood of Methodism preserves cordial relationships within the life of the church for the 'most varying types of political al- legiance. In English Wesleyan Methodism, for instance, and the same thing is true of other branches of the Methodist Church, men so widely separated in poli-
