Crowd Disperses.

No sooner did the crowd catch sight of the soldiers than there was a distinct change in their demeanour and they were dispersed without any trouble. As is usual in the case of street fighting, they had no stomach for a brush with the military and quiet W38 restored in the most effective man- ner we have seen employed in Sarapore since this series of troubles, began.

The military, however, were prepared for anything that might. hapnen, and brought Lewis, guns into the main thoroughfare,

So far as could be ascertained. no serious injuries were sustained, although a number of the police sustained severe cuts about the legs from falling missiles. Their topees appeared. to Have served them well, for In many cases the cloth surrounding them had been cut by bricks, and doubtless with a protection less adequate they would have been seriously hurt in

some cases.

One Chinese was seen lying on: the ground after order had been restored, but his injuries seemed to be more imaghiary than other- wise, to judge by his behaviour afterwards.

Police Injured

After the crowd had been dis- persed a number of bricks were thrown from dark corners but no harm was done. -

The Inspector-General of Police and the C.P.O. were present" and took an active part in quelling the disturbance.

A Chinose detective said he was on duty outside the Police Courts yesterday afternoon when he noticed a Hylam bow to the crowd, who wore standing in the com- pound, and address them as follows. We Chinese should open our eyes. now, our hearts are good, and we should be united. We live in the Straits, and the Britishers show kindness in their faces, but are evil in their hearts. We should. boycott them like we did the Americans who had to close most of their banke."

The detective arrested him in New Bridge Road. It was stated. that the accused had been all over the F.M.S., and Johore apparently trying to atir up trouble.
