CHINESE WITNESSES

CALLED.

EVIDENCE OF SPEECHES.

Another overcrowded court greeted the resumed inquiry into the Kreta Ayer shooting incident at Singapore, when the enquiry was resumed on March 28. It will be recalled that the shooting was the outcome of Hylam demonstra- tions during the anniversary of the death of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, the former President of the Chinese Republic.

The first witness called was Mr. Boey Lok Leong, J.P., a merchant. He stated that he was a Cantonese. Certain Chinese went to the Sec-i retary for Chinese Affairs to get; permission to hold a ceremony at the Happy Valley on the death or Dr. Sun. Mr. Goodman did not know them and asked them to bring some Chinese gentleman whom the Government could trust. Mr. Song Pang and he were ap- proached. The committee assured the C.P.O., and Mr. Goodman that all would be orderly. He and Mr. Ng Seng Pang simply went to the Happy Valley to see that they kept to their word.

COMMUNE SET UP IN SHANGHAI.

LOOTING IN CHAPEL..

The organization of the munici- pal administration in the Chinese territory adjacent to Shanghai is becoming the most serious political problem in Shanghai saya the N. C. Daily News. A Commune, in the form of a Provisional Council, has been organized, mostly of un- known or unimportant persons, which has been recognised by the Hankow Guvernment. The local military authorities dislike the Commune because it is dominated by the C. P. and interferes with their efforts to pacify Chapel and Nuntao. The Secretary then presented the estimates for the year 1927, showing an expenditure of $53,350, leaving a deficit of $5,650. The progress of the new building in Bonham Rond was referred to, the Secretary intimating that it would be completed within the next few months.
