THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH. SATURDAY, APRIL
MIXED GRILL By A Merry Miscellany
Ashley Sterne
A London chemist, I read, has invented 1 now metal called solium, for which it is claimed. that is can bo made either as soft as lead or as hard as steel, accord- ing to the purpose for which it is requirad. I am sorry that I can- not explain in my own words how It is possible for the same sub- stance to oxist in two contradic- tory forms. Unfortunately, my knowledge of chemistry is confin- ed to the mixing of Seldlitz pow- dera. But my friend, Professor Anaesthesius Bilgewater, has come to my assistance, and sent me the following"very lucid ox- planation:
"Bi-metallism, or the properly of a metal to exist in two forms,. is due to the anatoplam of its electrons, by which microcosmic vibration is irregularly induced in -the atomic structure. This vibra- tion varies directly {B the logarithm of the stimulus and in- versely as the square of its co- efficient, thus bringing about a state of complete metabolic trans- mophiam, which can .be either
Isotropous or polyhedrous, as in the case of soft soap and solid soap, cream cheese and hur?! cheese."
On behalf of myself and my readers, I wish to thank you, Pro- fessor. And now all we want to know is, how does the chorus go?
I understand that the committe appointed by the British Medical Association to consider the ques tion of tests for motorists in cases of alleged drunkenness has now completed its report. I am very anxious to see whether the report
that the husband whose wife, con- tinually feeds him on tinnod foods should be entitled to a divorce.
In which event I don't suppose there would be much wrangling y to who was to have the custody of the tin-opener,
"inspire men to a greater, display "Plump womon," says a writer, of outward affection than slim women do." But the real truth is this:--
My car is very fair and fat, And forty round the Equator; And yet I say in spite of that I never want to hate her.
Far from it Scores of times a day I'm driven to caress her,
Te ciss some fickle frown away And to my bosom press her.
:
And this inspires my friends to udd That fr me they discover It not a chap who's wholly mad, At least a loopy lover,
Who can't refrain to hug his wench On every apt occasion,
And doesn't try his zeal to quench By opportune evasion.
But let me, please, be strictly fair, And state a theory under:
It takes me ten embraces ere I've got completely round her! You get me? The instalment system again, of course. Where another fellow might embrace his girl four times, I should have to do it forty, which, I admit, does look a little excessive perhaps to the casual observer. But then the casual observer, if a perfect gentleman, ought to be casually observing in the
tion.

"H.M.S. PINAFORE."
SUCCESSFUL PRODUCTION BY PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY.
The Hongkong Philharmonic So- ciety, guve, the first performance of their production of the well-known Gilbert and Sullivan comie opora, "H. M. S. Pinafore", in the Theatre Royal last night, and the audience applauded a very enjoyable presen- tation.
There were small lapses which no doubt a first night inevit- ably entails, but after the on- couraging reception they had last evening, any of the players who might have had an attack of nor- vousness should take the boards with perfect assurance in future. The whole production reflects great deal of credit on those res- ponsible. Stage settings were ex- cellent, the orchestration leit nothing to be desired, and the care- ful rehearsals that had taken place ensured a capable portrayal of the different roles.

Of the ladies taking part, the fair Josephine, the Captain's daugh- ter, was most charmingly acted by Mra, C, P. Marcel. Her singing was also very pleasing. Mrs. G. Walt, as the Portsmouth bumboat woman, scored a great success, and her fine voice was heard to advan tage in the vocal parts. Sir Joseph Porter's cousin, Hebe, was in the capable hands of Mrs. J. Hollidge. Without being ungallant, however, we must give the palm for the night's performance to one of the other sex, Mr. A. J. J. Brock, as Sir Joseph. A finished netor, and the possessor of a fine voice, he Kave a perfect presentation. He was capably supported, by the other men principals, Mr. R. M. Keown es Captain Corcoran and Mr. D. M. Richarda as the able geaman, Ralph Rackstraw. Mr. Keown is already well-known to local theatre, goers and concert habitues, and his performance was particularly good. The others in the cast ench did his part ably, little Teddy Bullock giving promise of developing into an accomplished actor in a few years. The chorus were also res- ponsible for a great deal of the byching's success.
