With the arrival of additional Nationalist forces at Shanghai undisciplined Northern troops have "endeavoured to break through the Settlement defence barriers at various points. They fired on the Durhams and the latter replied inflicting considerable casualties. The defence line later became quiet.
Thousands of refugees, including Britishers and Japanese, are crowding into the Settlement from the suburbs, causing serious accommodation and food supply problems.
