LORD READING AND THE PRESS.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A

NEWSPAPER..

Lord Reading was the guest of the London Press Club at a "House" dinner held last month; to welcome him to Fleet-street on his active association with the newspaper world.

Lard Burnham presided and proposed the toast of "Our Guest" I remarked that they were offer-f ing the freedom of Fleut-street fol one of the best loved and muat distinguished of living English- mer. They believed that he would do a good deal still further to onhance the dignity of the pro- fession. (Cheers.)

80)

Lord Reading, responding, said he certainly had never thought that he would end his daya in Fleet-street, bat the attraction was great. To him human in- terest was always absorbing and there was nothing that touched human interest so quickly, actively, and so universally as the Press. He knew now some of its difficulties, and was beginning to realize what a complex machine: the Preas was. The news that was given to the public must be practically trending on the heels. of the event, otherwise it was no use. The duties upon which he were

onerous and had entered were responsible. The very salt of life, he believed, was respon- sibility. If he were asked in all hopesty what were the two things most necessary for a man's enjoy- ment of his life-leaving out que tions of domestic happiness, and so forth he would answer, with out hesitation, responsibility and hard work. He rejoiced in the opportunities that had been afford-
