DAMAGE CHARGE PROVED..
Considerable amusement whi caused at the Central Magistracy yesterday afternoon when a Chin ese interpreter of the Dotective Office was called to explain the Chinoso phrase, yan chi (bu careful), which was alleged to have been used by an ex-employed of the M. Y, San Co. Ltd, or a threat to one of the men to cease work.
The case was the continuation of the charges of maliciously da- maging a biscuit machine In the M. Y. San Factory, one of the three remaining defendants being fur- ther charged, on two counts of in timidation.
Mr. ES.C. Brooks appeared for the prosecution on the charges of malicious damage to the machin- cry, while Mr. Leo d'Almada re- presented the first defendant.
On the request of Mr. d'Almada, who appeared in the case for the first, time yesterday, the Manager of the M. Y. San branch in Wau chai was recalled, In reply to a question he stated that he was not Aware who were actually res ponsible for the dismantling of the machine.
The foreman, who was originally the sixth defendant, since dis charged, was called by the Magis- trate (Mr R. E. Lindsell). Hia Worship said that at the previos hearing he directed that the defen- dant be called in view of the state ments made by the other defen- dants.
Foreman's Evidence. Answering the Bench, wlineas said that he was in charge of the machine that had been dismantled. It had not been in use since Octo- ber last. The factory closed for the Chinese New Year holidays on January 29, but witness was un- able to state whether the machine was then in perfect order.
His Worship: Wasn't it obvio that on February 21, when you saw it, it had been dismantled I did not notice it.
