As a result, drastic steps have already been taken in the working out of a thorough and competent reorganization plan. To cut down. operating expenses, the Canton- Samahui and the Kowloon Rail- ways have been amalgamated, and so have the Canton-Hankow, Hu- nan-Hupei Section, and the Chu Ping Railways. In so doing, ona management will henceforth take the place of two. Superfluous | staffs are being rigidly discarded in various lines, and strict economy is to be exercised in all departments.

It appears that, on Thursday of last week, information was re-is ceived by the Kuomintang that the armoured train was coming and that Marshal Chang Chung-chang was on board, so a party of four volunteers was detailed to go and tear up the rails. Dressed as workmen, they engaged a sampan and four coolies "to come and do some work." By 11 p.m. the party, THE MERCANTILE BANK.UF set up for a point near Nanziang. Tools had been taken aboard the sampan, but no dynamite was available, so they had to without it.
