SUNNING” PIRATES' BID
FOR LIBERTY.
WARDERS OVERPOWERED AND SHOT.
ESCAPE PLOT FAILS.
:
A most sensational and desperate bid for liberty was made just after midnight last night by four of the condemned Sunning pirates, who are awaiting their execution day in Victoria Gaol.
The story in briefly told below in an official' statement made by Mr. J. W. Franks, the Superintendent of Victoria Gaol, and, although there are details lacking, it is clear that the four men, who occupied one cell, made a sudden attack on two warders who went in to take them a drink of water, overpowered the officers and then took their two revolvers, using these weapons › other officers who rushed up on hearing the commotion.
Three officers were wounded-two Europeans and one Indian- and they are now in the Government Civil Hospital. The pirates, who, accing that their attempt at escape was bound to fail, went back into their cell, were not wounded by ahots, but one of them was knocked out by a blow on the head.
Much excitement and alarm were caused by the sounding of the big alarm bell in the compound of the Police Headquarters and large numbers of police and warders, with weapons, assembled to render any service required.
