Hongkong, February 16, 1927.

BATTLE OF GIN DRINKERS' BAY.

FOUR MEN SENTENCED,

A thrilling story of a revolver battle between the police and. al-” leged robbers and kidnappers, at Gin Drinker's Bay, was told by the Attorney General, Bir Joseph Kemp, in the Supreme Court jes- terday when the Criminal 904- alons commenced boforo the acting Chief Justice, Mr. J. R. Wood..

The case for the Crown con- cluded during the afternoon and the four prisoners made statements. from the dock on their own behalf. The first aid he came to Hongkong to buy salt to pickle the vegetables he had grown. He was accosted. by robbers who struck him with revolvers and made him go with them.

The second prisoner said he brought his junk to Hongkong to buy salt and, in fact, deposited $60 with a Kowloon dealer In this connexion. The merchant was ; called and substantiated prisoner's' story that there had been dealings between them.

The other two men' said they were on the junk with the second prisoner when they encountered robbers who made them sail away in the direction of Gindrinkar's Bay. After the acting Chief Jus tice had summed up the jury re- tired and on returning brought in a verdict of guilty against all four men on the charges of attempted robbery and kidnapping. His Lardship sentenced each prisoner to three years' hard labour on each count, the sentences to run con- currently.

Praise For Police.

The jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the other charges against the four men, but a verdict of gulity in the case of the first prisoner who, was also charged with the possession of a dagger. This man was sentenced to an additional two years' hard labour, making'five in all, ba

After passing sentence the act- ing Chief Justice called Sub- Inspector Andrew to the witness box and said "I know full well that all the members of the Hongkong Police Force are accustomed to nc- cepting work such as in this case as part of the ordinary routine but you will allow me to congratulate you and all the officers with you. who took part in this matter for the way you faced up to great por- sonal risk with credit to yourselves and to the Police Force of the Co- lony.

The Jury also associated them- solves with His Lordship's re- marke.

Corinto, Nicaragua, Feb, 21. Eight hundred and ten American bluejackets have landed, 400 of whom have been posted at Leon, 800 at Chinandega and the others Bcattered along the railway to, guard the permanent way, bridges and watertanka.

Admiral Latimer emphasisos. that the landing is morely д сос- tinuance of the policy of protoct- ing the lives and investments of foreigners and in nowise a step towards intervention.

Washington, Feb, 21,

It is announced that the State Department's decision to land ad- ditional naval forces in Nicaragua. was taken with the full consent. and approval of the Nicaraguan Government.
