The 1,000 Marines on the Min- nesota are under the command of Lt.-Col. Carpenter, with Major St. G. Caulfield as second in command apd Captain Tollemache as ad- jutant

Lieutenant-Colonel George Car- penter has of late been serving at the Royal Marine Depot at Deal. He recently completed 30 years' ser- vice with the corps, and will be 50 years of age next November." Be- fore the Great War he was com- mandant of the garrison on As- cension Island. "Appointed In Au- gust, 1914, to command the Marine contingent on board the cruiser June, he was awarded the D.3.0.. for services during landing opera tions in the Persian Gulf in 1915. In that year also he was promoted major. In December, 1916, he be came Brigade Major at Doal depot, and 18 months later he was pro- moted brevet-lieutenant-colonel. He was made

$ aubstantive lieutenant-colonel in June, 1923. At the same time he was awarded the O.B.E. Colonel Carpenter has seen service in China; from 1905 to 1907 he was musketry instruc- tor at Hongkong.
