PROBLEMS OF RHEUMATISM.

DISEASE THAT CAUSES MANY DEATHS.

"It is estimated that there are no fewer than thirty thousand- deaths in England and Wales each. year due to rheumatic heart discase," said Dr. Reginald Miller recently when lecturing at the sixth Winter School. for Health Visitors and School Nurses at Bed- ford College. *

Some time ago it was estimated that no fewer than fifty thousand children had rheumatic disease, and that there were ten thousand cases in London alone. A rather interesting thing occurred towards the end of the war. When the conscripts of 1918 were called pp it was found in service that twonty-two per thousand of the youths of eighteen were rejected

tic. "It is quite clear that wo are face to face with one of the great killing and disabling diseases," said Dr. Miller.

Rheumatism, he said, was prac tically unknown in private schools, It was a disease of the poor, but. curiously enough it was not a alum disease. It was not a disease of the squalid child; it was a disease- of the upper stratum of the arti Ban type. If they knew why that was so they would have the key to the solution of the discaso "In their hands.

"It is," Dr. Miller continued, “a discase not of rural districts but of towns, and of industrial towns particularly as opposed to residen-r |tial."
