ROTOR SHIP,

THE RECORD OF THE BARBARA

The Barbara, built in Bremen and carrying three Flettner, rotors, made her drat voyaga in August, 1926, to Spain and Italy, in order to test the commercial value of the rotor equipment In practical trading. She has two 500-hp, oil motors, working on the screw through oil gearing. This enables the work done by the all engines to be reduced to one-third, without increasing the fuel consumption per horse-power, when it is de- sired to use wind-power on the ro tors to relieve the motors. The rotors are made of a light metal and are 2 times lighter per square metre than those of the Buckau, the first rotor ship. This fact and the use of ball-bearings reduce the driving power required" for turning the rotors to about 100 h.p. This is applied electrical- ly, and can be controlled from the bridge by the captain.

The trial trip yielded excellent results. With wind-power the ship did nine knots with her screw operated by both motors; 9 with the rotors and one motor. Thus even with wind-power 4 the rotors save more than half the engin- power. With both molors and the rotors the ship did 10 knots; the extra 11⁄2 knot is equivalent to an added 500 h.p, from the wind. With wind-power 6 to 7 the ship did 9 knots with rotors alone, and 10% with rotors and one motor. With wind-power 6, running the rotors and both motors, a speed of

MODERN GIRLS.

"AS NICE AS EVER."

"Girls nowadays are, better taught than they used to be, and they learn much more, but they are just as nice as they..ever were," said Miss Ethel Strudwick, the newly-appointed head mistress of St. Paul's Girls' School, Hammer- smith recently."

"Schoolgirls and college girls, of to-day are seriously minded," Miss Strudwick continuel. "They do not take life as a joke, but do everything with a purpose.
