To the Editor of the Hongkong

Sir-With reference to what "Fair Play" wrote.in his letter of

yesterday's date on the subject of an assertion alleged to have been made by a cortain lecturer on the "Belgenland" to the affect that

passengers on that boat need not be surprised if they saw Silch policemen handling Chinese rough- ly in Hongkong, as this was the only way in which they could handle Chinese, I feel I should, in the interest of justice and out of pity for unfortunate Chinese coolles, have it known through your columns 'that although the assertion was exaggerated, it was not wholly untrae,

On several occasions I have seen with my own eyes Sikh policemen beating or using their batons on Ficksha and other coolies, This thoughtlessness on their part does not, of course, reflect in the least on the efficiency of the Police Force, nor on British justice as it is generally administered in the East, for both of which I have nothing but the highest esteem.

My purpose in writing this let- ter is te invity attention to a state of things, which should not exist

The first inquiry was made at the Office of Works. The Office of Works said the Air Ministry was responsible. The Air Ministry, in turn, referred the inquirer to the Disposal and Liquidation Board,. and this Department turned him again to the Air Ministry. All these Departments pleaded ignor- ance of the Stonehenge "rubbish heap." Ultimately was stated that buildings under the direct control of the War Office, wer's near Stonehenge.

There is nothing surprising in this determination not to accept responsibility, since it does not re- dound to the credit of any Depart nient that this eyesore should allowed to remain on this histori ground.

Comrades had seen him fall and had buried him that evening in the moonlight. His papers and valu- ubles had been sent to the widow with an official attestation of her husband's death.

Six years later Frau Schutz married a Berlin workman in a good position and her life with him was very happy.

A few days ago she was sum- moned to the workmen's insurance office and asked to look at an in- surance card which had been sent in and appeared to be that of Karl Schutz who had died on the battle- field in 1918.

She went to the address given on the card and found herself face to face with the husband for whom she had worn widow's weeds. His home was Bright and cheerful and at his side was another wife.
