Lieut. Stanley replied that on the morning of the day on which the case was fixed he had heard that the charge had been with drawn against him. He therefore went to the Water Police Station and enquired whether the Police had heard about it. He was told that if the case had been with- drawn he did not need to attend the Court.

The coolie turned to the right and the car passed by. It was out of sight in a few sec ads. Turning to, Mr. Towns, who was in another ricksha, witness asked if the former had noticed the number of the car. Mr. Towns replied that it was No. 1,008,.

A Narrow Escape.

Col. Lewis said that he himself had seen the number, but asked Mr. Towns In order to confirma his own impression. On arriving at the Ferry, witness searched for the car but saw no signs of it.

Witness estimated the speed of the car at between 40 and 60 miles per hour.

In conclusion witness remarked that he would not have been there to give evidence if his ricksha had not swerved to the right.

Cross-examined by the defend- ant, witness said that the motor ear was about 60 yards away when he first saw it.

Mr. H. E. Standage said that he was in the fourth of five rick- shas which were turning into Salisbury Road. The leading vehicle was on the opposite, side. of the Road to witness'. About, 30 yards to his left, coming from, the direction br Holts Wharf witness saw a motor car proceed- ing at a speed of from 30 to 40- miles an hour,
