-BISHOP OF LONDON.
DEPARTING ON NEW YEAR'S DAY!
The Bishop of London will end his visit to Hongkong on Saturday, New Year's Day, when he will leavo in the Hakone Maru for Singapore..
The Bishop is to embark at Murray Pier at 9.46 nm. In the Seamen's Mission launch Day- apring. The Hakone Maru is scheduled to Ball it 11 a..
Cathedral at Home.
The visit of the Lord Bishop of London had no fuller day than yos terday, when commencing early, the distinguished prelate visited the St. Stephen's Boya School, the St. Stepher's Girls School and the St. Paul's Girls School, where the pupils were addressed en bloc.
On the conclusion of these visits, his Lordship was entertained at tiffin at the Hongkong Club by the Old Malburiens, leaving there. in the afternoon to visit the St. Paul's Boys School.
"An "At Home" was held in the St. John's Cathedral Hall at-4-pm, the venue having been changed" from the Bishop's House, owing to the grave indisposition of Bishop Duppur There was a fair atten- dance and after tea was served, during which the band of HMS. Carlisle rendered a musical pro- gramme, the Bishop gave a short address on the subject of continued effort by workers for the church. This was translated into. Chinese by Mr. Wong for the benefit of those of the nationality present.
The Only Religion, i
:..
"I am prepared to argue in any audience that Christ has no rivals, in the world to-day," declared the Bishop of London in an address to u congregation af men in the Cathedral last night. "When you look round there is no religion which In its power, its force, its claims, can hold a candle to our religion."
The Bishop discussed Buddhism, Mahomedarisv and Theosophy. Buddhism had no God at all, and if they wanted to see what the.. teaching of Mahomedunism led to, it was only necessary to go to Morocco where they would find four women around' one man, The one single thing that could changé the world and make it a better place to live in, was the Christian religion'. What they all wanted' was not a new religion but a new heart.
Replying in the affirmative to the query is the old Church adequate to preach the old gospel?," the Bishop of London referred to the missionary spirit of the Church and pleaded for sympathy for the men and women, who, with their lives in their hands and amid all this foreign agitation, went into distant parts of China to preach the gospel. These people were really the salt of the earth, and fully showed that the old Church meet the new was adequate to day.
The Bishop-referred to the Interest taken by the poor and the middle class in London in mla sionary work and instanced this as further evidence that the Church was showing itself full of life.
The Bishop made à brief refer- ence to Industrial strife and to the criticism which had been pas sed on the Bishops for.intervening. in the coal strike. He urged that it was only Christianity that could make"men love one, another.
It is understood that the Bishop leaves for Macao this morning, accompanied by the Revd. H. Thomas, the Revd. W. Halward and Mr. Blythe. A tiffin will be given in His Lordship's honour by the Commissioner of Customs to the British community and the party
