the Police of that port of a Chin- 080 junk currying arms and am-. munition concealed under its other cargo, says Politico in the WAR Canton Gazette. The junk seized, the arms and ammunition confiscated and the junkmen ar rested, sentenced and fined. The offence was unquestionable, and the penalty severe,"
This is evidence that the Hong- kong authorities are making an earnest effort to help in the sup- pression of banditry, and the ex- termination of the bandits in their territory,
There is help also being given in other ways. The search of Chinese passengers coming or leaving Hongkong is an approklat- ed measure. There is no doubt that this search will be maintained as long as it seems advisable. Passengers will be disgruntled but reasonable enough to submit..
There is a general hope that bat- ter results will soon be reported from the search and other mea- sures. As a matter of fact, there seems to be little doubt that arma and ammunition are passing through Hongkong and that! pirates are booking passage at the shipping offices.
Similar facts are recorded in Every- Chinese coastal ports. where the police seem to be power- legs to prevent the presence of pirates or organizations of pirates within the limits of territory un dej the supervision. Pirates, after all, look quite like other men when they are not engaged in the act of robbing or killing, and there are even stories of banquets being offered by the police to pirates masquerading as rich merchants or landlords,
We already have explained that piracy is not a Chinese, specialty. Whoever these pirates are and wherever they are," they must be discovered and exterminated. All governments who are taking mea- sures to help in this extermination deserve praise and support. The Nationalist Government should be aided in its campaign to clear the land zone around Blas Bay, and the Hongkong Government should be uided in its efforts to arrest those pirates who cross the boun-
