'Found contained in eight sacks,

Mauser pistols and 21,100 rounds of corresponding ammunition from a cargo boat in Little Sai. Wan |Bay on December 7, when on re- ceipt of information Sergeant Barnacle and a party of Chinese detectives visited that part

of the waters of the Colony and found the junk at anchor with all persons with the exception of one, asleep in the cabin.

The arms and ammunition were discovered concealed under some twelve, tons of coal cinders, but a subsequent search revealed a quantity of sulphur and saltpetro in addition to the arms. $

Altogether nine persons were taken into custody and on their" appearance before Mr. T. W Ainsworth and Major C. Willson at the Kowloon Magistracy, yes- terday, they wore all charged with being in possession of the arms and ammunition without a per- mit and with having in their pos- session 1,765 pounds of saltpetre and 800 pounds of sulphur.

All defendants returned plens of not guilty to both charges.

Detailing the facts of the enne, Inspector Ogg, said that the boat on which the contraband was discovered was a trading junk with a crew of eight and register- ed in Chiu Chow. The Police re-. ceived information that between 11 and 12 o'clock on the morning. of the 7th. inst., the junk. would be leaving Shaukiwan ·with quantity of arina on board,

A party of Police went to Sat Wan Bay where the junk was found. With the exception of a small boy all the occupants wèro. asleep. The junk was searched and in the sleeping hold, two Mausers and 30 rounds of am- munition were found while the remainder of the weapons and. ammunition were discovered .con-7 coaled under twolve tons of coal cinders which occupied almost the entire space in one of the holds.

The junk was then taken back... to. Hongkong and at the Yaumati anchorage, a further search was carried out when in the forehold 38 tins of saltpetre consisting of 1,766 pounds and twelve bage of. sulphur consisting of 800 pounds were found..

The Orst three defendanta ade. mitted that they were members, of the crew but denied. all know- ledge of the arms. The master was stated to have been ashore at the time, The remaining defendants claimed to be passen- gers.

Inspector Ogg pointed out that tho Junk was a big one and re quired a crew, of eight. Three would be insuficient to manage so big a boat.

After calling the evidenca sen- tence of two years hard labour,. was imposed on each.

But tugby, Dec. 17.

The New Zealand Prime Minis- ter, Mr Coates, left London for France to-day to visit “ the but- tlanolds, and the war cemeterioa of the New Zealand soldiers — British Wireless
