U. S. PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE.

REDUCTION OF TAXATION. LIKELY.

Washington, Dec. 7

In his annual message to Con- gress President Coolidge pleads for economy, but suggests that a portion of the Budget surpina estimated at 8383,000,000 be used to reduce the burden of taxation. He says that Customs' receipts for the present fiscal year are estimated to be over $616,000,000,-|-- which is a record and points out that 65 per cent. of the imports are duty free. The United States- admitted a greater volume of free Imports than any other country oxcept Britain. In view of the gitation for a reduction of tariffs, there does not seem to be a very large fell within the woga of American, importy, in which pros bablo reductions would be advan- tageous to foreign goods. Sufficient funds word ploaded to finance the storage and carrying of 4,000,000 bales of cotton, but no, method of meeting the situation would be adequate which did not contem.
