THE HONGKONG TELEGRAPH, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER

CRICKET NOTES.

[BX. “TWO LEGS,"

Of more than ordinary interest to local cricketers, and especially, to their supporters, was the ap pearance for the first time of the Club de Recreio in the Second League. In playing the strong Police team to a drawn game, they can regard their performance 45. quite satisfactory. The Recreio seem to be better served. in their batting department than the bowl- ing: Xavier's score of 60 was a fine effort.

The Cricket Club, who took the at field against the University Pokfulam without Bowker and Owen Hughes, gave a good ac- count of themselves, and all but won. Mitchell, who is at present in remarkably good batting form, just missed his half century by four runs, and Hayward scored rapid 78. At the close of play, the home team had a 'deficit of 30 runs with two wickets on hand. It was pleasing to see Rumjahn regain a little of his old form with a very well-played unfinished 82. especially after his fine bowling feat of the previous week.

| M. C. C. TOUR IN INDIA.

BEST PERFORMANCES TO "DATE,

Of the first nine matches which the M.C.C. have played during their Indian tour they have only. been able to complete two, that la which they heavily defented All Karachi and that in which South Punjab was. defeated at Lahore, in each case by an innings."

Inevitably the tourists have. proved to be far too good for the. opposition they have encountered And the only match in which they were in danger of being led on the Best Innings was in, the second match at Karachi a few days after the visitors landed in India, when- the Hindus and the Rest.scored 335 and the M.C.C. lost five wickets

for 249 rups

The outsanding player of the visiting alde has been Sandham, the Surrey batsman. In the open- ing match against the Parsi- Mohamedan side he scored 57, arid ́ followed this up with 129, against Hindus and the Rest, 67 against Karachi Europeans, 150 against. Rawalpindi and N. W. Frontier and 141 against the Army at Lahore.

Another player who has done well in the tour up to the present is R.E.S. Wyatt, the Warwickshire amateur, who has been bowling with success, and in addition to his 125 against Rawalpindi Euro peans, scored 63 in the opening match, 49 against Karachi Euro- peans and 65 against Northern Punjab.

At Happy Valley, the Civil Ser- vice started none too well against the I. R. C. With the score at 11 for two wickets, Sayer, and Fincher came in and changed the whole complexion of the game. Their partnership realised 124 runs. Sayer played a forceful in

His innings of 103 against shoulders to some loose bowling the Rawalpindi 'Europeans follow- and carried his but for 56. I haveed scores of 57 in the first match of the tour, 77 against All Karachi,. and 66 against, Rawalpindi and

heard it remarked more than once, and perhaps not incorrectly, that "Teddy" Fincher nearly always gets more than his fair share of bad length balls. This is set down with no intention of casting ners- flection in any, way on his batting ability; on the other hand, I am inclined to think that Wincher is probably the most dependable,run- getter of his side,

*

Set with 170 runs to get in a little over an hour and a half, the I. R. C. could only compile 112 for G wickets. 5. II. Ismail's innings was the best.of his side, and A. H. Mitar also, played a few delight- ful shots for his 28. The Civil Service versus I. R, C. match in the Junior Division was played as a friendly, and therefore, has no bearing on the League.

+

.W. Frontier, and he scored 95 in 'the later match against Northern Punjab.

Several good" individual scores have been registered against the tourists, but the best performance' to date was the, stand made by Hudson and Mallenson for the Arniy at Lahore, the former scor ing 04 (the highest scores so far, | against the M.C.C.) and Maḥlenson
