“BETA” RAY.
DR. W. D. COOLIDGE" ANNOUNCES HIS FINDING.
An astounding discovery which may make it possible to, do wond érs in science now only dreamed of by fantastic writers of strange fiction has been announced by Dr. William David Coolidge, assistant director general of the Generál Eléctri Company's research la- boratories in Schenectady, Now York.
It is claimed that his discovery makes it possible to produce radium ray with such volume as now, could only be Lossible from A ton of that race metal: And a ton is in itself an impossible con- ception, for It is 2,006 times more than tiline radium known 18 the world.
Americas reveling in excite ment over this announcement of what is conceded to be orie, of the most marvellous scientific disco- veries of the age. The new scien- tife agent is said to be compar- able in importance to the initial discovery of the X-ray and radium.
Dr. Coolidge proclaimed its wonders before the Franklin In- stitute in Philadephia in a note- worthy address at that institu tion. He declared that apparent- ly its medical and commercial pos- sibilities are unlimited:
It cannot be used in warefare he said, however, the ray only being projected so far to g extent of three feet.
"The methou" simply is the pro- ducing of a high voltage cathode outside the generating tube," Dr. Coolidge said in, explaining his discovery. A cathode is the néga- Hive fermthat of an electric source.
It is declared that Dr. Coolidge has now made it possible for scientists to work with a volume In one of the most important rays obtained from radium as would emanate from a ton of that rare metal, or 2,000 times more than now is known in the whole world. If a ton of radium could be refined it would be worth a hund- dred billion dollars,
The "Beta" Ray.
The Coolidge process produces what is called the "Beto" ray, and it is expected to prove useful in treatment of cancer and other malignant disense. Under its powerful beam, the deadliest germs will be destroyed. It has varied uses, and Dr. Coolidge declares, it can produce an orna- mental lacquer for metals vastly greater. In durability than any- thing in existence.
Dr. Coolidge said he has by this process already turned sugar to acid, grown hair on rabbita, kill- .ed insects and bacteria, altered the colour of grey "grdnite to luminous, multicoloured shades, solidified liquids, transformed in- visible gas into a yellow powder hitherto unknown to scientists.
In describing his discovery, this eminent scientist says it technic- ally will be known as the "cathode" ray." The ray has long been known to exist, but no scientist had been able to get it available for experimentation cxcept in wholly insignificant quantities.
Dr. Coolidge makes plain in his discussion that his discovery can never be utilized as "death ray" in time of war or as a lethal weapon like poison gas. Its pre- sent range is barely three feet, and Dr. Coolidge says it will never destroy an army unless the troops marched up into it.
Dr. William David Coolidge has long been one of the outstanding scientists in the world. He has been assistant director of the General Electric's" "research, la- boratories since 1908,
In 1914, he was awarded the Rumford Medal for his invention and applications of ductile tungs- ten, which revolutioned elettric lights. His reputation is inter- nationally known, and his an nouncement as cabled in the above dispatch carries unusual weight.
