GENERAL BOOTH.
ADDRESS IN THE THEATRE
, ROYAL
General Bramwell Booth, head o the Salvation Army movement, held a mesting in the Theatre Royal year terday evening at which bo gave an address on the aims and work of his organisation, The hair was taken by Sir Henry Pollock who remarked at the ontsot that General Booth neaded no introduction. They were fortunate in having persuaded him to give an address on the work of the Army, a work to which ho had devoted his whole life.
General Booth was received with prolonged applause. The ccension was a pleasure to him and he had to thank Sir Henry and Lady Fol- lock for their kindness in arranging the meeting. The Salvation Army, he. sald, was primarily a religious movement and a movement of con- siderable proportions although, only of recent history. It had three dis- tinct functions. In the first place it was a minister of Christ's evangel, a miestenger of Christ's gospel. Secondly it was a philanthropic and charitable organisation engaged on various works of mercy on behalf of humanity generally, and thirdly it was a religious society, with its own Bystem and Government. In these three aspects of activity it was scen in sonte 20 different states and coun- trics. The work was carried on in some 35 to 40 languages and in 14.000 different places and towns of which, he was sorry to say. Hong- kang was not one at present al though he felt it ought to be one. (Applause),
The "Army."
The Army Curried on some 2,000 social institutes for helping in some" way those who were less fortunte and had lost their places in social life. To carry on the work of the army, they had 21,000 to $5,000 off- cers, men and women who had been trained for the work and were up- ported by the funds of the Army.
Perhaps it might be said that the original idea of the Salvation Army was to offer help and salvation to those who were outside the ordinary influence of roligion. It was this idon which led his inther, the ori- ginator of the movement, to leave his own. chureb, give up his liveli- hood" and start out without friends to carry out the iden. Fo Jost all is friends when he left his church because they all thought he was, fool in give up a good position which is had taken him, some years to nittnin' to.

"So he started alone. At first he only thought of England; but the movement had now spread all over the world although it sprang from, that original iden. It had grown in a remarkable way and was now. world movement. because it was rendering. a world service. No mat

Umbrella and Souls.
In this connexion he recalled an incident in which a very excited man rushed into the office to see his daughter. After calming" down" he #aid. "Oh. Miss Booth, I have lost my umbrella." This ridiculous inci- dent serves to show he idon which prevailed about the Salvation. Army. It was their work to help people in get back lost umbrellas. lost characters and to save those on the way to losing their souls.
The Salvation Army was reidler- ing a great service in trying to strengthen belf in the super natural. Continuing he spoke of the work being done in prison by Salvation Army workers and be. was pleased to tell them that their workers were now allowed to carry on this work in prisods in North China. They had many converts, both men and women and even some of the warders had been touched. The Army was helping the world to. raise its standard of morals, in set- ting a standard before the working people, who were learning to load honourable and straightforward lives.

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 25,
The Army gave a place to dogma although not a very prominent one, that was all the time translating into actual fact the things which it taught
Education.
Flo did not wish to throw thơ, slightest shadow on the importance
the pastoral work of the churches wanted was an antagonising fores but this was not enough. What was
for good.
Later the General spoke on eda cation.. Ha remarked that, he had nothing to say against education but at the same time it was not salva tion. It would never make, a bad man good nor tum the falso into truth. We were, in those days, la danger of expecting too much from the intellectual, I woworo all mind then intollect would be the chief thing but that was not all We wore neither all mind not all body, there was the soul, that which will endure and which will be changed. His knowledge of the eng cated classes did not encourage him to think that education" would take the place of salvation.
At the conclusion Sir Henry Pal- lock thanked General Booth for his address ned commented on the work done by the Army hearty vote of thanks to Sir Honry for presiding. was unanimously carried.
