TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE, whilst the newly-formed Cadot correspondent at his headquarters

The story of the terrifying experience, whilst in the hands of pirates, suffered by Father Fletcher and seven Sisters of the Maryknoll Mission, most, of whom are Americans, is told by their arrival here yesterday from Kongmoon.

Together with many Chinese passengers, the missioners were proceeding on Friday from Kongmoon to Yeungkeng aboard the steamer Wai Hoi, formerly on the Wuchow run, when a dozen pirates travelling as passengers seized control by shooting dead the soldier guards, the purser, the cashier and a clerk.

After imprisoning the missioners and passengers, the pirates ran the boat aground at a place named Chek Pei, where they were joined by another gang of bandits and a systematic looting of all aboard took place. The next day was spent by the removal of the cargo, including 500 cases of kerosene, and after the Chinese pas- Bengers had been taken ashore for ransom, the captain and the missioners were released and allowed to get away by the steamer.

The misfortunes were not over yet, however, for the steamer later went aground and during one day was visited by no fewer than twenty different bands of pirates, who completed, the work of looting." Eventually, the steamer managed to get to Kongmoon, from which point the mission party came to Hongkong.

The details of the affair, as told by the Maryknoll Procure, of Kowloon, are as follows:
