Clarke has been associated with the mercantile" interests of the Colony for close upon half a century, first as an officer on the boats of the Hongkong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company, then as Secretary and later as "a Director. He has seen Hongkong grow from a place of comparative- ly small dimensions to its predent proud position among the biggest of the world's ports, and it is to his credit that he has played a pat unimportant part in its deve- lopment

Our Portrait is of Mr. WALTER EWHITE, of 41 Dolla-jane, Chiswick, London, England, who writes t

Some three years ago I had a swelling in the imos cap. 'Oas night. I knocked my knoo which caused a little uleer which in timo, no matter what I did, developed heross the whole knee, I had one large gaping wound, and with all the care and attention that wound was open for 15 months. Being an all-round-athlete, Holder of many cups and prizes, I began to give up all hope of ever taking my place again among the athletes. One day one of my felley workmen inquired how my leg was and fold me it was Clarke's Blood! Mixture I wanted. That day I bought a bottle, and when I had finished it I was not only surprised myself, but all. my workmates could see improvement

could bend my knee a little and that gave me encouragement, so 1 persevered with it and am glad to say soven bottles completely cured me. I am now as well as over, and am still holding my own as no athlete."

Rescue and Relief Work.

Among many acknowledgments for services rendered. Capt. Clarke held a letter of thanks from the Government of Macao for rescue and relief work when n disastrous tornado passed over the inner harbour of that city. causing much destruction" and loss of life among the boating popula- tion. It is interesting to recali that in the year 1900, Capt. Clarke was wrecked in the s.s. Putami Maru off Cape Kalavite, Mindor›, Philippine Islands.

The late Capt. Clarke held the position of Secretary to the Hong- kong, Canton and Maeno Steam- bbat Company from 1906 until 1917. When he retired, the Com pany made generous acknowledg- ment of the very valuable services he had rendered during his long and honourable connection with their interests. Although ceasing. to take an active part in the af- fairs of the Company, he did not entirely sever his connection with it, for he continued to serve as a director, in which position his advice and assistance were Pendily given. He was also a member of The Consulting Committee of the -Douglas Steamship-Company It was appointed an Unofficial Justice of the Peace in 1908,

His Sporting Activities.

A keen sportsman, Capit. Clarke was much interested in motoring, rolfing and yachting. He was member of the Hongkong Club. and various other "institutions in the Celony. He was also known to play a good game at bowls, and on the occasion of the last visit of the Shanghai Interport team, he was in Taipo rink which play. ed against them. Since his retire- ment, he made his residence at Talpo.

At the time of his death, Capt. Clarke was on a visit to his daughter, who is the wife of Mr. A. B. Stewart, who left the Co- lony Reveral months ago on transfer to the Shanghai offices of Messrs. Jardine Matheson and Company.

Of a genial and likeable tem perament, the late Capt. Clarke will be much missed by his many: friends here.
