A WILY WIZARD.
WOMAN'S DEALINGS WITH
SOOTHSAYDR.
The wiles of a local Chinese soothsayer were revealed at the Contral Magistracy Fosterday when a fortune teller was charged with optalning money by fraud By the promise of a fortune and by holding out the possibility of serious illness "a woman was in- duced to pay the soothsayer over $400 and yesterday related an ex- traordinary story of the man's duplicity."
..
The woman said she had hover been to a fortune teller before, but saw the sign outside, the house and wont in. She was told that, she was the heir to a large fortune, a legacy of a previous Incarnation. There was however, an evil spirit between the woman and the money, and the defendant required that certain joss, cere monies should be performed.
The woman paid $4.80 for these ceremonies and a further $27 for a "spirit message" On another visit to the soothsayer, she was told to burn 1,080 sanscrit books and to erect an altar and make a sacrifico, She paid defondant $46 for this and he told her that the scrifice must be made in a monastery on a well known hill.
Another Prophet. Other sums of money were paid over in due course and. eventually the soothsayer's.

"brother prophet" was introduced, PENDING DEPARTURE.
Ho told the woman that the, fol- lowing day, being the fifth of the fifth moon was a lucky day and told her to worship all the gods in all the temples in Hongkong.
She was then told to return on June 15 bringing `one cent's worth of joss paper. On another occasion four pieces of Joss paper were put in a box and after some worshipping a Shanghai silver dollar was found inside. This bore certain characters, on one side the woman's name and on the other "$500,000."?
The woman paid a further $100 when she was, told that the sooth- sayer wanted to rent a house and to buy afteen leather trunks. The latter were to receive the fortune. She was also asked to buy a piece of yellow paper and then the prophet, would ask the gods which day was propitious for the fortune to be received. This piece of paper was placed in an envelope and after gods had been worshipped, the envelope was opened and the paper found to bear, characters.
Averting A Calamity.
The characters said that a calamity awaited her in the 29th year and that she would die be- fore that time. ' The calamity. could be averted "by payment of $68 gold. She could not find the sum and was told that $2,000 Mexican would do. He eventual- ly told the woman that he would consult. his uncle prophet" and later on payment of $36, this. man promised to do all he could for her.
This prophet averred that her luck was very poor and that she would have a serious illness, and the matter was again referred to the defendant. The woman con- cluded her story by saying that her husband found she had pawn- ed her jewellery to pay the sooth- sayer fees and set inquiries on foot.
In a statement from the dock, defendant said the woman asked him to joss for her and to carry out sacrificial rites and worship ping. The other man had ab sconded from Hongkong when the strike, was settled.
Defendant was sentenced to three months' hard labour.
